How to Draw Anime and Manga Characters

How to Draw Anime and a brief Introduction

Manga is an increasingly popular art style. This How to Draw Anime section introduces you to what is it, how to draw anime, and just what the hype is all about.

What is Anime?

Anime, Manga, Japanese Animation.

You may recognize these terms (or not). They are used to describe Japanese cartoons and comics.

Characters in anime have several defining traits:

  • Large eyes
  • Big hair
  • Long limbs
  • Bodies that are more or less similar to actual humans
  • 'Chibified characters', or Super-deformed characters, have large heads, small bodies

However, the above styles are not set in stone. I'll show you a few variations in my lessons.

Anime has been around for quite some time. In fact, you've probably watched some without realizing it.

Here is a small list of popular Japanese animations that you might want to check out:

  • Astro Boy
  • DragonBall
  • Sailor Moon
  • Doraemon
  • Gundam Series
  • Pokemon

Generally, the manga art style is meant to portray characters in a more attractive manner. So why don't you give this style a spin? Your character might come out looking better than ever!

Tutorials

Drawing anime characters may be slightly tougher than your average cartoon person. Since they resemble real humans, you'll need to learn some basic human anatomy.

Worried? Relax! I'm not gonna kick you out, demanding that you learn human anatomy before coming back. I'd be a pretty lousy drawing sidekick if I did.

As I've said, My Cartoon Drawing Guide is a beginner friendly site. My tutorials will start out from Ground Zero. From your basic stick figure, to a fully developed Anime character.

Remember: Anyone can draw!
